Clock fault finder 9

Checking the wheel train

Apply pressure to the great wheel of the going train. With the pendulum removed the escape wheel should trip through the pallets. If the train does not run the movement may be seized or some of the pivots bent or gear wheels/pinions damaged.

If the train runs, inspect the action and drop of the escapement The drops on both pallets should be even and not excessive. If the drops are excessive or uneven the pallets will need re-facing and adjusting. If the pallets visibly “lift” when engaging with the escape wheel teeth the pallet arbor holes require re-bushing.
