Checking the mainspring

If the spring is contained in a barrel, remove the barrel cover and inspect the inside of the cover. Check the spring is not catching / marking the inside of the cover. If the spring is too wide for the barrel it will scrape the inside of the cover and possibly unwind unevenly. Ensure the spring is the correct type and size for the movement.

Remove the spring and check the spring is not fatigued. When removed from the barrel an efficient spring should expand quite considerably and retain its spring.

Examine the “eyes” of the spring. The eyes must not be torn and should positively locate on the barrel and arbor hooks.
