Spring cleaning
The tip ‘Spring Cleaning’ in Clocks, June 2008, reminds me of the general confession ‘We have left undone those things we ought to have done’. I have known springs with larege patches of dried oil and metal wear which nothing short of scraping would remove. By not removing a spring, its condition cannot be judged: does it open up enough; are the holes tearing; are the arbor holes a good fit. Removal of the largest springs—not my favourite job—is no problem if the right equipment is used—a large enough winder and clamps to restrain the spring.
I wish Peter Simpkins all the best and trust my comments will not be taken amiss.
