Leeds dial painter
I enjoyed reading Tom Spittler’s article and Dave Carlson’s reply to Tom’s article about Scottish clocks with a ‘G’ in a diamond followed by numerals, which Tom thought might represent the date, displayed on cargo cotton bales on the dial.
Recently I came across an English dial used by clockmaker William Allott of Bradford that shows a sailor enjoying his pipe while sitting on a crate marked: ‘I T Leeds 1824’. There is a John Allott listed by Loomes (Volume 2) as working 1822 to 1837 in Bradford. Could ‘I T’ be a Leeds dial painter who left his mark?
