Making adjustable pallets
When making the Vulliamy-type adjustable pallets I drill a 1/16in hole in the non-business end before hardening. This serves two purposes. It is easy suspending the nibs together on a piece of thin wire as I heat them to harden the gauge plate of which they are made and it is easy to dunk them end-on into water. I also put a 10 BA 1/2in length screw through the hole as I mount them in the slots of the arms of the frame. Twisting a small screwdriver blade enables elevation of the pallets by small increments totally under control, which avoids the hit-and-miss fiddling with the pallets. The arbor collets I fix by using a cotter pin which is very easily adjustable instead of the usual grub screws which mark the arbor and make tiny adjustments difficult.
