Recording engagements

Many places in clock mechanisms require wheel and pinion teeth to engage in a particular orientation. Strike trains and strike trips are two of these. When the correct engagements have been found after repeated tries it is worthwhile recording these for the future, for self or other overhaulers. This can be done with the aid of correcting fluid often called ‘White out’. A little dab on the side of the wheel and the side of the pinion tooth will show precisely how the two are to go together to produce the correct operation first time. Where appropriate all the mechanisms of my collection have these non-damaging marks and they now save me frustration time when ‘clean and oil’ time comes round.
